AVP Has Record Year as Passenger Growth Soars

FlyAVP_Blog_2017_1

The Bi-County Airport Board and Team AVP are pleased to announce record passenger traffic in 2017. Nearly 532,000 passengers flew in and out of AVP, breaking the old record of 491,416 set in 1990.  The Airport also had 10 record high months in 2017.  Total passengers for 2017 were 14.9% higher than in 2016.

“AVP’s importance to Northeastern Pennsylvania and the economy continues to grow,” said Patrick O’Malley, Lackawanna County Commissioner and Chairman of the Bi-County Airport Board. “Travelers from Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier of New York expect AVP to keep them connected to the world, and we’re doing so.”

“AVP has seen steady growth for the last three years now”, said AVP Executive Director Carl Beardsley. “As demand for air service continues to rise in Northeastern Pennsylvania, we have been working with our current airlines (American, Delta and United), as well as new airlines, to ensure residents have excellent connectivity to the world,” Beardsley continued.

2018 is off to a strong start with Regional Sky announcing new air service to Pittsburgh this Spring, as well as American Airlines adding capacity to their Charlotte and Philadelphia hubs in April.  In addition, American will be adding twice daily service to Chicago O’Hare in June, which will complement United’s twice daily service to the “Windy City”. With this expansion, American will add over 1,200 daily arrivals and departures at AVP through the summer.

Beardsley added, “That’s an additional 64,000+ seats in our market with American.  We expect American to continue the added service into the future, and we are optimistic that our other carriers will be adding additional service this year.”
